What is HeatRateMD?
HeatRateMD is a comprehensive monitoring and diagnostic solution designed to help power generation facilities enhance performance and reduce operational costs. By integrating PI AF calculations with clear, real-time visual dashboards, HeatRateMD transforms complex heat rate data into actionable insights.
It's more than just software. It’s a strategic tool that measures how efficiently a plant converts fuel into energy, identifying opportunities for cost reduction, performance optimization, and sustainability.

Understanding Heat Rate Efficiency
In simple terms, heat rate measures a power plant’s thermal efficiency, or, how much fuel energy (BTUs) is needed to produce one kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity. The lower the heat rate, the more efficient the plant. For Example:
.png?width=640&height=360&name=A%20group%20of%20three%20smoke%20stacks%20from%20a%20coal%20fossil%20fulel%20plant%20in%20the%20desert%20(1).png)
1. A coal-fired powerplant might record around 10,000 BTU/kWh.

2. A modern gas combined-cycle plant can achieve ≈ 7,000 BTU/kWh

3. A modern gas turbine or cogeneration facility may reach efficiencies near 6,500 BTU/kWh.
Why HeatRateMD Matters
Traditional monitoring systems often stop at data collection. HeatRateMD goes further, turning information into insight. It identifies deviations from design specifications, quantifies financial impact, and recommends precise actions to improve efficiency.
With fuel accounting for 45 – 75% of power generation costs, even a 1% improvement in heat rate can result in savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.
